Steven Cernan Jr.,87, who operated a landscaping service in Cleveland for more than 50 years and lectured community groups about organic gardening, died Friday in Lakewood Hospital.
A graveside service will be Friday 12/3 at 11 a.m. at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.
He saw combat with the Army in Germany during World War II. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star Medal. His unit was among the first in the U.S. Army to free prisoners from the Dachau death camp in Germany.
Cernan served with the Army National Guard for nearly 36 years and retired as a lieutenant colonel. He helped activate the first air defense battery in Cleveland using Nike-Ajax and Hercules missiles.
