CSM Jeffery Carter

jeff carterJeffrey N. Carter, 75, of Kent, passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at UH Portage Medical Center. He was born September 23, 1946, in Painesville, Ohio, to Norvin (Nick) and Norma Jean Carter. A 1965 graduate of Eastlake North High School, Jeff was a standout athlete later named to the school's Hall of Fame. He won a football scholarship to the University of North Carolina, where a knee injury ended his sports career in his sophomore year. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, where his leadership skills were quickly recognized. He led an infantry platoon in Vietnam and was honored with a Silver Star Medal for gallantry in combat. He served his country for 31 years, retiring as a Command Sergeant Major. Jeff was a big-hearted, "John Wayne-style" man who loved his family with all his might, and he loved God, country and hard work that same way. He poured himself out to friends and strangers alike, giving his all in every endeavor. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, camping, fishing and golf. Survivors include his beloved children, Joe (Lindsay) Carter and Jennifer Stanley; granddaughters, Taylor Stanley and Ella, Ava and Lyla Carter; siblings, Sue Alpaugh, Victor "Mike" Carter, Pat (Fred) Meyer, and William "Bill" Carter; fiancee Kathy Burdick Baker; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Barbara Kovacs Carter. Jeff was a member of Redemption Chapel, 3900 Kent Road, Stow, where a memorial service will be held in his honor on Tuesday, January 25. Calling hours at the church 3 - 5 p.m., with the service immediately following. Memorial donations in Jeff's memory may be sent to Freedom House, which assists veterans.
